Some Spanish teenagers apparently built a homemade balloon camera that traveled to space and took this picture and others. I am really impressed! I used to work with teenagers, and they never did anything like that. No offense to them, because they were still quite awesome.
Their photos are here.
Having just watched Salt, a film about extreme photography, and Solo, a film about a man’s extreme and dangerous journey to the outer reaches of possibility, I am gonna link all three of these things together with: a fourth thing.
Enjoy!
This video shows Joseph Kittinger, who in 1960 rode a high altitude helium balloon to over 100,000 feet (about 30,000 meters) and then jumped out of it. And there is some surfing at the end, what better way to unwind after a stressful space-jump?
btw, I am interested to hear what ya’ll thought of Solo. I thought it was a pretty amazing, well documented and compelling account, but I didn’t like the main guy at all. It seems completely irresponsible and almost criminal to go on a suicide mission like that when you are leaving behind a wife and son.
His motivation came off as an insecurity-laden mid-life crisis rather than the “inspirational story of bravery” he may have thought. The most courageous thing he could have done was swallow his pride and turn the kayak around.
